Every year, a lot of people (young and old) come from different villages and gather to watch "El-Mermah" which is a local horse race held annually on a dusty road among the fields in Fayoum which is located 100-kilometers southwest of the capital, Cairo. Horse owners and farmers compete in pairs as every two horses race with each other for about 500 meters. Although those who win don't get money, farmers put a white scarf around the winning horse's head and the horse's market value goes up for every race the horse wins. That's why a lot of farmers make sure their horses participate in such races.
