Street Weddings
This project deals with the culture of celebration in Egypt with a main focus on the street weddings there and how normal people use this open space as a means to express their joy, excitement and wildness. Unlike Europe, the presence of night clubs in Egypt, where people can go celebrating, is so rare. Many people, especially young men, would go instead to the weddings that are held publicly in the street where they can dance and celebrate freely. These weddings are open for everyone and one doesn’t have to be invited to get in. Women would normally celebrate a little privately and separately inside homes. Street weddings have their special music (Mahraganat) which spread widely during the last few years in Egypt and now there is no local wedding without this kind of music.
